Under the UN Charter, the UNSC has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. As outlined in the Charter, the UNSC has the power to establish peacekeeping operations, international sanctions and authorize military action with any dispute that has broken out into violence. Any other complaints that disrupt peace can also be raised and the UNSC may send parties to help administer an agreement. While other organs of the United Nations make recommendations to Governments, the Council alone has the power to take decisions, which Member States are obligated under the Charter to carry out. Please keep this in mind for the entirety of the weekend. As guarantors of international peace, you must carry the weight of the world’s biggest disputes and conflicts on your shoulders.
