Specialized Overview
Dear Delegates,
Welcome to BosMUN XII! I am Tuaha Mubarak and I am proud to be serving as your Under-Secretary General for Specialized Committees this year. I am a sophomore at Boston University and will be majoring in Biomedical Engineering and International Relations. Last year at BosMUN I was a crisis staffer in the Specialized Crisis Room. Coming from Pakistan I have always been extremely interested in International Affairs, and that is the very reason that ever since I joined the Boston University International Affairs Association (BUIAA) I have not been able to imagine my college career without it. Being a part of BUIAA, and participating in BosMUN, provided me with an excellent opportunity to represent Boston University and help organize our own conferences and events.
This year we will take you on a ride from the 1930s to the present day through the 8 very exciting Specialized Committees we are running. Some of these committees are in the auspices of the United Nations; however, you must have noticed that some are a little different than what you would normally see in a MUN conference. These committees were specially chosen because of their importance today. For instance the “Multilateral Summit of Emerging Developing Nations” will specifically focus on the developing countries which extensively contribute to the growth of today’s world. Having India, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, China, Cambodia, Russia, Vietnam and many other countries like these sit down and debate how their rise is pertinent to the first world and must be taken seriously. Another committee is the “First Round Table Conference (November 1930)” which is our historical committee this year. Officially initiated byKing George V on November 12, 1930 at London and chaired by the British Prime Minister,Ramsay MacDonald, the series of Round Table Conferences were a crucial part of the Indian history prior to the independence and partition of the Indian Sub-continent. It will be interesting to have delegates representing the Hindu, Catholic, Sikh, Muslim and liberal populations of India along with the elite of 20th century India and Britain. I assure you that you will find all these eight committees very interesting and intellectually stimulating.
You obviously know that through Model UN you get to learn a lot about international affairs, politics and sharpen your public speaking skills. Nonetheless, another very significant part of MUN is the networking opportunities that you will have. Especially at a conference like BosMUN where you get to meet hundreds of high school and college students is an ideal time for you to meet people from all over the world and listen to their diverse opinions about so many different issues. Where else will you get to change the map of the world and represent personalities like Barack Obama, Kim Jong-un and Muhammad Ali Jinnah?
I sincerely look forward to meeting all of you during the weekend of the BosMUN XII. I am sure that you will be able to share your opinions and experiences with each other and most importantly have fun!
Regards,
Tuaha Mubarak
