Organization of American States
Committee Overview
Founded in 1948, the Organization of American States is the oldest regional international organization still in existence. All thirty-five independent American states are members. Its charter cites four main principles: democracy, human rights, security, and development. The OAS works to promote these four ideals throughout the region while dealing with specific issues such as disarmament, sustainable development, hemispheric security, trade, and labor rights. Member states meet regularly in Washington, DC.
