Committee Overview

The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is a special advisory body to the Economic and Social Council. Its focus is to help the over 370 million indigenous people that currently live in the world attain basic economic and social rights. The Forum holds annual meetings in New York, with its very first meeting having been held in 2002. The Forum is not the only body that addresses indigenous issues, but it is unique in its mandate of promoting the inclusion of indigenous people in the international system. The Forum has focused on including the indigenous people of the world in decisions, whether they are judicial, political, or economic, that affect them. The Forum contributed to the years of work that created the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, which was adopted by the General Assembly in September of 2007.
