Committee Overview

The Commission on the Status of Women is the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC’s) policy-making body dedicated to women’s rights and the promotion of gender equality. It was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) on 21 June 1946. Representatives of UN Member States working toward the advancement of women gather in New York at the UN Headquarters every year and assess the progress on goals designed to address global challenges for women. In the ten-day conference, representatives from UN Member States and Multinational Non-Governmental Organizations work together on women’s issues related to education, health, economic, political and human rights. The Commission creates and evaluates policies that focus on the empowerment of women. It lays out concrete recommendations for action by governments, intergovernmental bodies and other institutions, civil society actors, and other relevant stakeholders to be implemented at the international, national, regional and local level in agreed upon conclusions and resolutions.
