Committee Overview

The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) has existed as long as the United Nations has. It meets every year at the UN headquarters in New York during the spring. The Commission’s mandate is to advise on social policies and make recommendations on promoting social progress. Part of that mandate is monitoring the implementation of agreements made at Copenhagen in 1995. These agreements focused on dealing with poverty, unemployment, environmental issues, and social integration. It is in charge of reviewing former policy decisions on social development and improving them. The Commission works by establishing general themes for their meetings and reviewing sub-themes under them. The Commission has recently focused on the themes of ‘The Eradication of Poverty,’ ‘Social Integration,’ and ‘Promoting Full Employment and Decent Work for All’.
