Committee Overview
On May 28, 1985, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CECSR) was established under ECOSOC resolution 1985/17. The Committee holds two sessions per year in Geneva. One of its main functions is to monitor the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. Those member states of the Covenant are reviewed and recommendations are made on ways to further economic, social, and cultural rights. The committee also makes comments on the Covenant itself and the committee’s interpretations of it as well as press releases on its progress. Press releases often include statements on its recommendations to governments. For example, a recent press release recommended making reparations to victims of torture.
