Committee Overview

For many years, Somalia has seen its country torn apart by rival clans and extremist groups. Many foreign countries have abandoned Somalia, seeing no solution to the problems plaguing the nation today. The country has been void of stable leadership since 1991, when President Siad Barre was overthrown by infighting. Responsible for the task of bringing stability to Somalia, this committee will have to quell the chaos of the war-torn country. The Transitional Federal Government was established in 2004 but has done little of consequence to date. Limited by their lack of resources and legitimacy, the Transitional Federal Government needs to establish strong support from the population and various factions to gain back control of its country. The connections between the al-Shabaab extremist group and al-Qaeda as well as the issue of piracy make the situation in Somalia of particular concern to foreign countries. It will be this committee’s responsibility to move Somalia out of its state of virtual anarchy and reestablish an effective government in the country.
