Committee Overview
In 1968 the United States is at a turning point in its history. The President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, is in his fifth year of presidency and potentially coming up for reelection in the fall. The New Hampshire primaries have just come to a close on March 12th and shown disastrous results for his popularity. The country is in the heat of the Vietnam War, something LBJ inherited from his predecessor John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and the Civil Rights movement has a strong momentum under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The turmoil surrounding LBJ has led him to gather his closest political confidants for a Tuesday Luncheon in order to discuss the situation. This group includes not just his cabinet, but those not directly involved in the government who have been crucial to LBJ’s career. This lunch meeting will give advice to the Head of State for him to take into consideration when making policy decisions.
