SPECPOL is the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly.  It focuses on social and political problems in today’s society. Specifically, SPECPOL deals with issues regarding decolonization, peacekeeping, public information, outer space, as well as a variety of other topics. While SPECPOL does not have the power to take military action, place sanctions, or enforce laws, the committee is important in advising nation-states and other committees on the aforementioned range of issues. SPECPOL plays an extremely important role for the United Nations in drafting statements of advice to the General Assembly, as well as considering the impacts of existing treaties and international agreements that address these issues.
